    Hilary MacGregor, Chief of Staff

Hilary MacGregor is a writer, mother and activist based in Los Angeles.  She attended Wellesley College and Columbia Journalism School, and has a Masters in East Asian Studies from the University of Washington.  She worked for the Los Angeles Times for 11 years as a staff writer, doing stints in both news and features, and has written over 1200 stories.  A fluent Japanese speaker, she reported from Tokyo, Ventura, the San Fernando Valley and downtown Los Angeles.  She wrote about the closing of the last leper colony in Japan, the JCC shooting in Granada Hills, the plight of immigrants stuck indefinitely in detention centers in the high desert, books, trends, celebrities, pop culture, and debauched Oscar parties. In 2002, Hilary created a new beat for the Los Angeles Times Health Section: Alternative Medicine. She became the first reporter at a major US newspaper to cover Alternative Medicine as a full-time beat.  Her stories and personal essays have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, and Los Angeles Magazine. In 2008, she helped start a charter school, and served on the board. Prior to her journalism career, Hilary lived in Japan for five years, studying Japanese, teaching English, and serving as legislative aide to one of the first women in the Japanese Parliament. She translated and wrote Akiko Domoto’s speeches for international and U.N. conferences on Biodiversity, Women, and the Environment.  Both of Hilary’s boys attend a local charter school. Hilary deeply respects teachers, believes passionately in public schools, and believes that every child deserves an exceptional education.
